Why
I wholeheartedly encourage every student to take part in our recitals! These events are about so much more than performing - they’re opportunities to share the joy of music, celebrate hard work, and connect with family and friends who’ve supported each step of the journey.
Recitals are truly inspiring experiences. They motivate students, build confidence, and create lasting memories. As an educator, I’ve seen time and again how participation in recitals helps students grow - not just musically, but personally. Because so much of music learning happens in the moment and can feel abstract, performing gives students (and parents!) a clear, rewarding way to see their progress come to life.
We always have a wonderful mix of students on stage, from absolute beginners to advanced players - and our youngest performers are often the highlight of the day! Each recital is a joyful reminder of how far our students have come and how much music can bring us together.
Let’s make the most of these opportunities to share, learn, and celebrate through music!

Dress Code
Over the years, I’ve received several questions about what’s appropriate to wear for the recital. Since this is a special occasion, the dress code is formal - think clean and classy, not just cute.
Recommended Attire
Students and families are encouraged to dress in a way that reflects the importance of the event. Some examples include:
Slacks or chinos
Suit jacket or sport coat
Button-down or collared shirt
Tie (optional)
Full suit
Dress (linen or similar material preferred)
Dress shoes
Girls are not required to wear dresses; if choosing pants, slacks or chinos are recommended.
Attire to Avoid
Please avoid the following items to maintain a polished and respectful atmosphere:
Jeans (light or dark)
Leggings as pants (leggings under a dress are fine)
Shorts
T-shirts
Mini skirts
Tennis shoes or sneakers (yes, even the designer pair)
If you have any questions about attire or need help deciding what’s appropriate, feel free to search “formal wear for boys/girls.”
Recital Day Procedure
Step 1 – Prepare
Before leaving home, be sure to:
Dress to impress!
Bring your music (even if you plan to play from memory, it’s always best to have it on hand).
Have a light breakfast so you’re energized but comfortable.
Step 2 – Arrival
Arrive 15 minutes before the recital begins.
When you arrive, please check in with the usher outside the venue.
The usher will direct students backstage for final preparations.
Family members are kindly asked to remain outside until the doors open for the audience.
Step 3 – Doors Open
Once the doors open, audience members may enter and find their seats.
Step 4 – Showtime!
When everyone is seated, the recital will begin. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the wonderful performances our students have prepared!
Step 5 – Certificate Ceremony & Refreshments
After the performances, each student will be recognized and presented with their certificate. When the ceremony concludes, everyone is welcome to stay and enjoy light refreshments and conversation.
Step 6 – Celebration!
Once you’ve enjoyed some snacks and shared congratulations with fellow students and families, the day is yours! Perhaps head to Rice Village for a celebratory lunch or take a stroll (or even a roll!) down the hill at Hermann Park.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Memorization is encouraged but not required. Performing from memory can help build confidence and focus, but students are always welcome to bring their music on stage. The goal is for each performer to feel prepared, confident, and proud of their work.
-
Most recitals run about 60–90 minutes, including the Certificate Ceremony. We keep the program moving at a comfortable pace so families can enjoy the performances and still have time to celebrate afterward.
-
Absolutely! Recitals are a celebration, and guests make them even more special. Invite grandparents, friends, and anyone who would love to support your student’s progress. Seating is usually open, so early arrival is encouraged.
-
That’s completely normal! Every performer (no matter their age or experience) feels a few butterflies before playing. Encourage your child to take a deep breath, focus on enjoying the music, and remember that everyone in the audience is there to cheer them on.
-
Yes, you’re welcome to take photos and videos - but please do so without flash. Be mindful not to block others’ view, and consider saving longer recordings for after the recital or during the certificate ceremony.
